Elderly caregivers concerned about future
March 4, 2005, FRANKFORT -- A resolution requiring the state to study issues relating to elderly citizens who care for adults with mental retardation passed the House Wednesday and is on its way to Governor. The bill is the first passed by freshman Senator Denise Harper Angel, D-Jefferson.
"What's most important is that my first bill will help people who really need help. Afterall, that's why we're here," Harper Angel said.
Harper Angel said there are thousands of older caregivers who assist adults with mental retardation. These senior citizens worry about what will happen after they are no longer able to provide daily care, she said. Currently there are nearly 2,400 individuals on a waiting list for the Supports for Community Living Program.
Senate Joint Resolution 85 directs the Kentucky Commission on Services and Supports for Individuals with Mental Retardation and Other Developmental Disorders to conduct a study of the issue and to report back to the legislature.
Harper Angel said she became interested in the issue by volunteering and because of an aquaintance with a couple in their 80s who had a son in his 50s with Downs Syndrome.
Formerly Jefferson County's Property Valuation Administrator, Harper Angel said it's exciting to have her first bill on its way to the Governor's desk. "I'm thankful for the opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of people who need help," she said.
